Questions Clients Ask Before Starting

The questions people ask before committing to a career coaching engagement reveal more about their real concerns than any intake form ever will. Here is what I hear most often and how I answer them honestly.

When someone reaches out about career coaching, they rarely start with the question they actually want answered. The first email or call is usually polite, a little vague, and full of phrases like "I just need some direction" or "I want to make sure I am not wasting my time." That last one is the real question, and it deserves a straight answer.

How long will this take? This is the most common question, and the honest answer is that it depends on what we are working on. A resume rewrite with a focused job search strategy usually takes four to six weeks of steady effort. A broader shift, like moving from operations into a product role, can take three months or more because it involves building evidence, not just fixing documents. I give a realistic timeline in the first session, and I update it as we go.

Will you just review my resume, or do we work together on the whole process? Some people want a one-time document review, and that is a valid choice. Others need help with the full arc: resume, LinkedIn profile, interview practice, and follow-up strategy. I am clear about what each format includes so there are no surprises. If someone only needs a resume check, I say so and point them to the right option rather than pushing a longer engagement.

What if I do not have a clear goal yet? This comes up more than you would expect. Many early-career professionals know they are unhappy but cannot name what they want instead. That is normal. The first two sessions are often about mapping what you actually enjoy, what you are good at, and what the market will pay for. We do not need a perfect five-year plan on day one. We need a direction that feels true enough to test.

How do I know you are the right person to help me? Fair question. I have worked with professionals in IT services, banking operations, education, and manufacturing across India. I do not claim to know every industry deeply, but I know how to structure a job search, how to frame experience on paper, and how to prepare for interviews in a way that feels like you, not a script. If your situation is outside my experience, I will tell you and suggest someone better suited.

What happens after the engagement ends? The goal is not to create dependence. You should leave with a resume you can update on your own, a set of interview answers you can adapt, and a job search plan you can run without checking in every week. I offer one follow-up session a month after we finish to see how things are going, but the work is designed to stand on its own.

These questions are not obstacles. They are signs that someone is taking the decision seriously. If you are weighing whether to start, the best first step is a short call where you can ask your own questions and see if the approach fits. That call costs nothing and gives you a clearer sense of what the work would actually look like.
